Mank is David Fincher’s first feature film since 2014 release Gone Girl. You can view the Mank trailer and poster below, and you’ll find lots more photos underneath the poster.
In Mank, 1930s Hollywood is re-evaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane for Welles.
Fincher is directing from a screenplay by his late father, Jack Fincher. The producers include Fincher, Ceán Chaffin, Eric Roth, and Douglas Urbanski.
The score is being created by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who have previously collaborated with Fincher on 2010’s The Social Network, 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl. The duo won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network and a GRAMMY Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
The ensemble cast includes Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz, Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies, Lily Collins as Rita Alexander, Arliss Howard as Louis B. Mayer, and Tom Pelphrey as Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
Also starring are Sam Troughton as John Houseman, Ferdinand Kingsley as Irving Thalberg, Tuppence Middleton as Sara Mankiewicz, Tom Burke as Orson Welles, Joseph Cross as Charles Lederer, and Jamie McShane as Shelly Metcalf.
The cast is rounded out by Toby Leonard Moore as David O. Selznick, Monika Grossman as Fraulein Freda, Charles Dance as William Randolph Hearst, Jeff Harms as Ben Hecht, and Leven Rambin as Eve.
Filming for Mank began on November 1, 2019 in Los Angeles. Shooting also took place in Victorville, California and the filming wrapped on February 4, 2020.
Jack Fincher wrote the script before his death from cancer in April of 2003. The movie was originally set to be filmed in the late ’90s, though the script went unproduced until David Fincher kick-started the project.
