Lionsgate Acquires U.S. Rights to Neil Burger’s Voyagers

Lionsgate has acquired United States film rights to AGC Studios and Thunder Road’s sci-fi thriller Voyagers, reuniting the studio with writer/director Neil Burger, who is coming off his hit film The Upside.

Set in the near future, the film chronicles the odyssey of 30 young men and women who are sent deep into space on a multi-generational mission in search of a new home. The mission descends into madness, as the crew reverts to its most primal state, not knowing if the real threat they face is what’s outside the ship or who they’re becoming inside it.

Starring Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One, X-Men: Apocalypse), Lily-Rose Depp (The Dancer, The King), Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch), Viveik Kalra (Blinded by the Light, Next of Kin, Beecham House), Quintessa Swindell (Euphoria), Isaac Hempstead Wright (Game of Thrones), Archie Madekwe (Les Misérables, Teen Spirit, Midsommar, SEE), Archie Renaux (Morbius), Chanté Adams (Roxanne Roxanne), and Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Minority Report, Total Recall), the film is being described as Lord of the Flies for a new generation.

Coming off his No. 1 box office success The Upside, Burger (Divergent, Limitless, The Illusionist) directs from his own original screenplay produced by Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road Films, which produced the John Wick franchise including Lionsgate’s current blockbuster release John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which has grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, as well as A Star Is Born, The Town, Sicario, and Wind River and Burger’s Nota Bene Productions banner. Thunder Road’s Brendon Boyea is producing alongside Iwanyk and Burger, with Stuart Ford and AGC’s Head of Film Greg Shapiro onboard as executive producers.

AGC is fully financing the picture in partnership with AGC investors Fibonacci Films, Ingenious Media, and Aperture Media. Fibonacci’s Greg Clark and Victoria Hill also serve as executive producers. The film was a major seller at Berlin’s European Film Market earlier this year with amongst others Universal International acquiring a number of major territories.

“Acquiring US rights to Voyagers was an easy decision for us,” said Jason Constantine, Lionsgate President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions. “We have worked with Neil Burger very successfully and he will without a doubt create an experience with Voyagers as a sophisticated and stylish event sci-fi thriller. Paired with the amazing producing team behind John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and this outstanding cast of our industry’s most talented young actors, this package had everything we were looking for that made us excited and eager to jump on board. Voyagers is a unique opportunity to present an elevated horror film with deep and complex morality themes.”

Production on the film began this week in Romania.

“We are thrilled that the talented team at Lionsgate will be distributing Voyagers for us in the United States,” said Stuart Ford, AGC’s Chairman and CEO. “They are simply extraordinary as partners and I could not have more confidence in Joe Drake and their marketing group led by Damon Wolf.”
