During Lionsgate’s First Quarter Earnings Call, CEO John Feltheimer confirmed that John Wick 5 is in development and that the studio is aiming to film the fourth and fifth installments back to back.
“We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theatres Memorial Day weekend 2022,” said Feltheimer. “We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 and 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year.”
Keanu Reeves is currently filming Warner Bros. Pictures’ fourth The Matrix movie, which is scheduled to open in theaters on April 1, 2022.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed $171 million theatrically at the domestic box office and $326.7 million worldwide, nearly doubling the box office performance of John Wick 2. All three have a collective gross of more than $587 million worldwide.
In addition to Keanu Reeves, John Wick 3 stars Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Marc Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, with Anjelica Huston, and Ian McShane.
In the film, super assassin John Wick (Reeves) has a $14 million price tag on his head after killing a member of the High Table, the shadowy international assassins’ guild. Now excommunicado, and with an army of the world’s most ruthless hit men and women on his trail, John must find a way to survive in this third chapter of the adrenaline-fueled action series.
Feltheimer also confirmed “one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood” (his words), that Jennifer Grey will star in and executive a new Dirty Dancing movie for Lionsgate. 50/50 and Warm Bodies helmer Jonathan Levine will direct from a script by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis.
“It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history,” said Feltheimer.
Released in August of 1987, the first Dirty Dancing is set in the summer of 1963, when innocent 17-year-old Baby (Grey) vacations with her parents at a Catskills resort. One evening, she is drawn to the staff quarters by stirring music, and there she meets Johnny (Patrick Swayze), the hotel dance instructor, who is as experienced as Baby is naive. She soon becomes Johnny’s pupil in dance and love.
Directed by Emile Ardolino, the film also stars Jerry Orbach, Cynthia Rhodes, Jack Weston, Jane Brucker, Kelly Bishop, Lonny Price, Max Cantor, and Charles ‘Honi’ Coles.
Lionsgate owns the Dirty Dancing rights and released the sequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights in 2004. The Guy Ferland-directed film stars Diego Luna, Romola Garai, Sela Ward, John Slattery, Jonathan Jackson, January Jones, and Mika Boorem.
