Leslie Odom Jr. has signed on to play a role in the upcoming The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark, according to Deadline. Though there is no official word on who he will play, the site suggests that he will figure into the conflict involving Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola).
Odom Jr. is known for playing the role of Aaron Burr in the play Hamilton as well as performing in the show Rent. He has appeared in Murder on the Orient Express, Needle in a Haystack and Harriet.
The Many Saints of Newark takes place in the 1960s, when riots swept through Newark, New Jersey and conflicts between African-American and Italian residents were at their worst. A few of the characters from The Sopranos are expected to appear in the movie.
Alan Taylor will direct the movie for New Line Cinema. Taylor has credits that include TV shows Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire, and feature films Terminator Genisys and Thor: The Dark World.
David Chase, creator of the series, wrote the script for The Many Saints of Newark with Lawrence Konner. Chase will produce and Nicole Lambert will executive produce.
Hailed as one of television’s essential dramas, The Sopranos follows James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano: husband, father and mob boss whose professional and private strains land him in the office of his therapist.
