Leonardo DiCaprio is Teaming with Del Toro on Nightmare Alley

Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to star in Fox Searchlight PicturesNightmare Alley, based on the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham. The film will mark Guillermo del Toro’s next after his Oscar-winning film, The Shape of Water.

According to Variety, Del Toro will direct the film and co-wrote the script with Kim Morgan. Nightmare Alley is being produced and financed by Guillermo Del Toro and J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment.

The book is described as follows: “Nightmare Alley begins with an extraordinary description of a freak-show geek—alcoholic and abject and the object of the voyeuristic crowd’s gleeful disgust and derision—going about his work at a county fair. Young Stan Carlisle is working as a carny, and he wonders how a man could fall so low. There’s no way in hell, he vows, that anything like that will ever happen to him.

“And since Stan is clever and ambitious and not without a useful streak of ruthlessness, soon enough he’s going places. Onstage he plays the mentalist with a cute bimbo (before long his harried wife), then he graduates to full-blown spiritualist, catering to the needs of the rich and gullible in their well-upholstered homes. It looks like the world is Stan’s for the taking. At least for now.”

The film is scheduled to start shooting in the fall of 2019.

DiCaprio can next be seen on the big screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, opening in theaters on July 26. An animated version of the actor is also featured in Lil Dicky’s new music video for “Earth.”
