Legion of Leia Podcast: Child Not Released Documentary

On this week’s Legion of Leia podcast, hosts Jenna Busch and Anastasia Washington welcome documentary filmmakers Rita Ciolek and Marianna Mankowska. These women are doing some important work, developing the documentary Child Not Released about child abuse related to addiction. It’s not genre, but on the Legion of Leia Podcast we like to celebrate and promote female filmmakers, particularly when it’s about such an important subject.

Ciolek, founder and creative director of Kazia Productions and Mankowska met while showing films at a festival and came together to begin to put the subject out there. There are a lot of great people attached to Child Not Released. There are either written or verbal agreements here, and they’re in talks with many others. The people involved include Dr. Ramani Durvasula, Dr. Regina Pally, Jenica Morin-Pascual, Dr. Gabor Maté (currently in talks), Dr. James Doty, Clinical Professor of neurosurgery at Stanford), and David Rudd – multi Emmy award winning filmmaker – is their mentor.

Here is the synopsis for Child Not Released:

“More than 70,000 people died from drug overdose in 2017 in the United States. Drug overdose deaths now exceed those attributable to gun violence, suicide, car accidents, homicides, or HIV/AIDS. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, two-thirds of the people in treatment for drug abuse report being abused or neglected as children. Dr. Gabor Maté, a Canadian medical doctor who spent over a decade working with alcohol and illicit drug addicts on the skid row of Vancouver says that nearly all of hard-core drug users have a history of horrific abuse or neglect in their early years. His meticulous research led him to discover that abuse and neglect have a profound effect on brain development in children, which causes susceptibility to addictions later in life (according to statistics, more than a third of adolescents with a report of abuse or neglect will have a substance use disorder before their 18th birthday). Child Not Released examines long-term consequences of child abuse and neglect with emphasis on brain development and the resultng susceptibility to addictions, problems related to building healthy relationships with oneself and others, and repeating cycles of abuse in the context of intergenerational trauma. The film also offers innovative approaches to healing, cutting-edge treatments, and experimental programs to help survivors re-wire their brains and overcome trauma.”
