Knights of the Old Republic Movie Reportedly in the Works

A Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic movie is reportedly in the works with Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) writing the script. BuzzFeed News reports that Kalogridis was hired to adapt the beloved video game in the spring of 2018.

In fact, the site adds that Kalogridis is close to finishing the first script of a potential Knights of the Old Republic movie trilogy.

Released in July of 2003 for the Xbox, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, aka KOTOR, is a role-playing video game developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts. The game debuted for Microsoft Windows in November of 2003 and was later ported to Mac OS X, iOS, and Android. It is playable on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 via their backwards compatibility features.

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, players are immersed in an epic saga that takes place 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire — a time when Jedi and Sith numbered in the thousands. The game features deep character customization, and branching storylines that lets players choose their alignment with the Force and change the outcome of the narrative in real time.

Earlier this month, it was announced that three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022. The December 2022 project is from Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but it’s unclear if that would be the first Knights of the Old Republic movie, or if it’s a separate project.

Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is also developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies, so Kalogridis’ scripts could be for those films as well.

Laeta Kalogridis most recently was a co-writer on Alita: Battle Angel. She also executive produced The House with a Clock in Its Walls and created, wrote, and executive produced Altered Carbon.
