Lionsgate confirmed today that the studio has closed a deal for Kevin Hart to traverse Pandora alongside Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett in director Eli Roth’s adaptation of the bestselling video game Borderlands. It was revealed today by Nathan Kahane, President of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
Kevin Hart, who has opened ten films at #1, will play Roland, a skilled ex-soldier turned mercenary.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Kevin,” said Roth. “Borderlands is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they’ve never seen before. He’s going to be an amazing Roland.”
Added Kahane, “Kevin has been behind some of the world’s biggest blockbusters, and our source material is inspired by one of the world’s best-selling video games.
“We love the way our filmmaking team has adapted this story and we couldn’t be in better creative hands.”
Based on the best-selling PC and console gaming experience from developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K, a wholly owned label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., Borderlands is one of the world’s most successful video game franchises, with more than 66 million units sold-in worldwide, including over 24 million units of Borderlands 2, which is the highest-selling title in the history of 2K.
The most recent installment, Borderlands 3, which launched in September 2019 and was recently released for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, has sold-in more than 11 million units worldwide and was honored with the award for Best Multiplayer Game at Gamescom 2019 and Best Ongoing Game at Gamescom 2020.
The latest draft of the screenplay by the two-time Emmy-winning screenwriter Craig Mazin. Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing through their Arad Productions banner, with Erik Feig also producing through PICTURESTART.
The film’s executive producers are Randy Pitchford, executive producer of the Borderlands video game franchise and founder of the Gearbox Entertainment Company, and Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive.
Kevin Hart has become Hollywood’s box office powerhouse, opening ten films at number one at the box office with $4.23 Billion revenue at the global box office. Hart can most recently be seen on his newest stand-up special, Zero F**ks Given, which quickly became Netflix’s biggest stand-up special of 2020.
Hart has also starred in Quibi’s Die Hart, the first production of its kind created through his digital network, Laugh Out Loud, and Executive Produced through his production company, HartBeat Productions. He recently wrapped production filming Sony’s action-comedy The Man From Toronto, which he stars in alongside Woody Harrelson and Kaley Cuoco.
Earlier in 2020, Hart wrapped production on Fatherhood, a movie which he is starring in and also producing through HartBeat. In December 2019, Hart’s Emmy nominated docuseries Don’t F**k This Up was released on Netflix. Hart was most recently seen in theatres in Jumanji: The Next Level, which crossed $800 million in global revenue.
His other roles include The Secret Life of Pets 2; The Upside; Night School, which Hart co-wrote, produced, and starred in, all under HartBeat Productions; and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, his highest grossing movie to date.
