Gerard Butler (Greenland, London Has Fallen, Olympus Has Fallen, 300) is set to star in Greenland and Angel Has Fallen director Ric Roman Waugh’s new action thriller Kandahar. Waugh will direct from a screenplay he wrote with former military intelligence officer Mitchell LaFortune.
The film is being produced by Thunder Road Films’ Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, G-BASE’s Alan Siegel and Gerard Butler, and Capstone Group’s Christian Mercuri. Rob Moran will executive produce along with Brendon Boyea and Jonathan Fuhrman.
Thunder Road acquired the original screenplay from LaFortune in 2016. The story is based on LaFortune’s experiences at the Defense Intelligence Agency in Afghanistan at the time of the Snowden leaks.
The film continues the oeuvre of production company Thunder Road, also the producer of the John Wick and Sicario franchises, in bringing high intensity action to character-based stories.
In Kandahar, Butler stars as Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative working in the Middle East. An intelligence leak dangerously exposes his classified mission and reveals his covert identity. Stuck in the heart of hostile territory, Harris and his translator must fight their way out of the desert to an extraction point in Kandahar while eluding the elite special forces hunting them.
Principal photography will take place on location in the Middle East. Capstone is co-financing the project and handling international sales on the film. They will present the project to buyers at the upcoming Virtual Cannes market. CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and is representing the film’s U.S. rights.
Kandahar marks a reunion for Butler, Waugh, Iwanyk and Siegel, who most recently teamed on STX’s upcoming thriller Greenland, set for a wide theatrical release. Waugh also directed Butler in Angel Has Fallen, the follow-up to Olympus Has Fallen, and London Has Fallen, which Butler produced and have collectively earned nearly $400 million worldwide.
“It’s rare to find the combination of such undeniable talent like we have on Kandahar with Gerard, Alan, Ric and Basil. Add in an amazing action script and you have a feature film that sets the bar very high. I am delighted to work with the whole Kandahar team and to bring this film to the marketplace,” said Mercuri.
“We are so thrilled to be able to bring the Greenland band back together again. Mitch’s script has always been a jewel in our slate, and to have this team bring it to life is a dream come true for us,” added Iwanyk.
Ric Roman Waugh most recently directed Greenland and Angel Has Fallen. Prior to those films, he produced, wrote, and directed the harrowing prison thriller Shot Caller, starring Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. This followed him writing and directing the thriller Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, for Participant Media and Summit Entertainment.
Waugh helmed the critically-acclaimed film Felon from his own screenplay for Sony. He also produced and directed the documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me, released by Participant Media/Takepart..
