Frozen 2 and Mindhunter star Jonathan Groff has joined the cast of Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Matrix 4, according to Collider. The site says that it is unknown which character the actor may be playing, though it’s not hard to see that he could play an agent in the new film given the previous look of the agents.
Jonathan Groff is joining a cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith returning to reprise their original roles. Also joining the cast are Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris.
Lana Wachowski — the co-creator of the record-breaking and genre-defining world of The Matrix — is set to write, direct and produce the all-new film, returning audiences to the reality-bending universe. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Filming is expected to begin in early 2020.
Wachowski is producing the film together with Grant Hill. The Matrix 4 screenplay is by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The cinematographer is the Oscar-winning John Toll.
The three previous films — The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003) — have earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office and were all top-10 domestic hits in their respective years of release. The Matrix Revolutions was also the first film ever to release simultaneously in every major country at the same hour around the world.
