Joker Becomes the Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movie of All Time

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Joker has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie off all time, surpassing the previous record set by the first Deadpool movie. The Todd Phillips-directed film has now earned $788.1 million worldwide (and still going strong), with $258.6 million coming from North America and $529.5 million from international markets.

2016 release Deadpool previously held the record with $782.6 million (Deadpool 2 earned $738 million its original run and was rereleased as a PG-13 cut that brought it up to $785 million). Deadpool films star Ryan Reynolds congratulated Joker with a funny social post, in which he said: “R-Rated box office congratulatory posts aren’t like the ones you’re used to…”

In addition to Deadpool, he included the characters from the other highest-grossing R-rated movies as well, such as The Matrix‘s Neo, IT‘s Pennywise, and The Passion of The Christ‘s Jesus. You can view his full post below.

Joker stars Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, alongside Oscar winner Robert De Niro, and it is directed, produced and co-written by Oscar nominee Todd Phillips. The plot centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

The film also stars Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red SparrowMolly’s Game), Frances Conroy (American Horror StoryCastle Rock), Brett Cullen (42Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (BillionsBarry), Douglas Hodge (Red SparrowPenny Dreadful), Marc Maron (MaronGlow), Josh Pais (upcoming Motherless BrooklynGoing in Style), and Shea Whigham (upcoming First ManKong: Skull Island).

Phillips (The Hangover trilogy) directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver (The Fighter), based on characters from DC Comics. The film was produced by Phillips and Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It is executive produced by Richard Baratta, Michael Uslan, Joseph Garner and Bruce Berman.
