John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum Tops Box Office with $57 Million

Avengers: Endgame‘s reign at the domestic box office ended this weekend with Lionsgate‘s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum opening to $57 million from 3,850 theaters, an average of $14,812 per location. That opening almost doubles the first weekend of John Wick: Chapter Two, which debuted with $30 million.

Internationally, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed $35 million from 66 markets, for a global opening of $92 million. In 2017, the second installment earned a total of $92 million domestically and $79.5 million overseas, for a total of $171.5 million worldwide.

Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick: Chapter 3 stars Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, Saïd Taghmaoui, Jerome Flynn, Jason Mantzoukas, Tobias Segal, Boban Marjanovic, Anjelica Huston, and Ian McShane. The film received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame dropped to second place its fourth weekend with $29.4 million domestically to take its North American total to $770.8 million. The film has now passed Avatar ($761 million) to move up to the No. 2 all-time domestic spot behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($937 million).

Internationally, Endgame added another $46.8 million and is up to $1.844 billion (with $625 million from China), making it the No. 2 international film of all time behind only Avatar ($2.028 billion). The worldwide total is now at $2.614.8 billion and is getting closer to Avatar‘s record of $2.788 billion. Made for $356 million, the film was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

Dropping down a spot to third was Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s POKÉMON Detective Pikachu, which collected $24.8 million domestically and has brought in $94 million after two weeks. The movie topped the international box office for a second-straight weekend with $53.8 million from 72 markets and has earned $193.4 million overseas (with $70.3 million from China) and is at $287.4 million worldwide. Directed by Rob Letterman, the $150 million-budgeted film stars Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, Ken Watanabe, and Bill Nighy.

Universal Pictures sequel A Dog’s Journey debuted in fourth place with $8 million from 3,267 theaters, an average of $2,449 per location. That’s quite a dip from the first film, A Dog’s Purpose, which opened with $18.2 million in 2017. In better news, A Dog’s Journey received an A CinemaScore from audiences and also brought in $15.5 million from international markets, for a total of $23.5 million. Directed by Gail Mancuso, the movie stars Josh Gad, Dennis Quaid, Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, Kathryn Prescott, and Henry Lau.

MGM’s The Hustle, starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, rounded out the top five with $6 million and has earned $23.1 million after two weeks. The movie has also grossed $28.1 million overseas and is at $51.3 million globally. The female-centered remake of the 1988 comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was directed by Chris Addison.

In sixth place, Sony Pictures thriller The Intruder earned $4 million and has grossed $28 million after three weeks. Directed by Deon Taylor, the movie stars Michael Ealy, Meagan Good, Joseph Sikora, and Dennis Quaid. The film was made for just $8 million.

Long Shot (Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment) dropped two spots to seventh with $3.4 million and has brought in $25.7 million after three weeks. Directed by Jonathan Levine, the romantic comedy stars Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Andy Serkis, June Diane Raphael, Bob Odenkirk, and Alexander Skarsgård.

Also opening was The Sun Is Also a Star (Warner Bros. Pictures, MGM), but the book adaptation made just $2.6 million from 2,073 theaters in eighth place. It didn’t perform better internationally, where it earned $484,000 from 25 markets. Directed by Ry Russo-Young, the film stars Yara Shahidi, Cahrles Melton, and John Leguizamo. It received a B- CinemaScore from audiences.
