Jared Leto and Daniel Espinosa to Team on Sony’s Morbius Movie

Director Daniel Espinosa (LifeSafe House) is set to direct Jared Leto in Sony Pictures‘ upcoming adaptation of the Morbius the Living Vampire comics. Leto has recently appeared in Suicide Squad and Blade Runner 2049.

The project, which is part of Sony‘s Marvel Universe, was written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the duo who created the Lost in Space remake on Netflix. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster.

In the comics, Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius discovered he was dying, a rare disorder dissolving his blood cells. Not wanting to distress his fiancée Martine, he began secretly working on a cure. With the aid of his partner Emil Nikos, Morbius attempted using distilled fluids from bats to stay his disease. While experimenting with such serums on board his yacht, Morbius had Nikos run an electrical shock through his system. The combination profoundly changed Michael’s body, transforming him into something resembling a vampire.

Created by writer Roy Thomas and originally designed by penciler Gil Kane, the character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 in October 1971.
