Idris Elba to Replace Will Smith as Deadshot in The Suicide Squad

Idris Elba is in talks to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Smith dropped out last month due to scheduling issues. The trade says that Elba was the first and only choice for Gunn and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Although Warner Bros. Pictures hasn’t confirmed who will be back from the first film, they were hoping to have its biggest stars like Smith and Margot Robbie reprise their roles for the new Suicide Squad movie. Robbie is currently filming the Birds of Prey spinoff.

With a release date set for August 6, 2021, the studio is hoping to start production this fall.

It was previously reported that Warner Bros. was not looking at making a direct sequel but more of a relaunch. Gunn will take the franchise in a new direction with mostly an all-new cast of characters and actors.

Charles Roven and Peter Safran will produce the feature. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder will serve as executive producers.

Directed by David Ayer, the first Suicide Squad also stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Jay Hernandez, Joel Kinnaman, and Jared Leto. Suicide Squad cost about $175 million and grossed an impressive $746.8 million worldwide. It was officially described as follows:

“It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?”
