Tony and Grammy winner Idina Menzel (Frozen 2) and Emmy winner Billy Porter (Pose) have joined Camila Cabello in Sony Pictures’ upcoming Cinderella movie, according to Deadline. Menzel will play Evelyn, the evil stepmother, while Porter is set to play the fairy godmother.
According to the site, Cinderella will start shooting in London in February of 2020. The next role to be cast is that of the prince. Sony is planning a February 5, 2021 release date. Kay Cannon will direct the film, which is said to be a modern re-imagining of the traditional tale of the orphaned girl with an evil stepmother with a musical bent thrown in for good measure.
The idea for the new Cinderella movie came from James Corden, who is producing the film with Leo Pearlman, his partner at Fulwell 73 (The Class of ’92, Bros: After the Screaming Stops, Carpool Karaoke).
Cabello will also be heavily involved in the creation of the music for the upcoming movie. She rose to fame as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which formed on The X Factor in 2012. She left the group in December 2016 and released her first solo single, “Crying in the Club,” in May 2017. Her debut studio album, Camila, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with its lead single “Havana” topping the charts in various countries. The second single, “Never Be the Same,” also reached the top 10 in several countries.
Kay Cannon’s credits include writing the Pitch Perfect films, writing and producing 30 Rock, and co-executive producing and writing New Girl. She also created the Netflix series Girlboss.
