Hulu has announced the green light for The Great Season 3, the original comedy series Reboot, and limited series The Plot.
From Tony McNamara (The Favourite), The Great Season 3 will consist of 10 episodes. The critically-acclaimed second season debuted on Hulu on Friday, November 19, 2021 and is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 100%.
In season two of The Great, Catherine (Elle Fanning) finally takes the Russian throne for her own — but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of ‘liberating’ a country that doesn’t want to be.
She’ll battle her court, her team, even her own mother in a bid to bring the enlightenment to Russia. With only occasional historical facts, the series also stars Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
The Great is created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding, Thruline’s Josh Kesselman and Ron West, and Matt Shakman.
The series, from Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television, was one of the top performing original comedies on Hulu in 2021 and continues to grow Hulu’s highly successful slate of female-driven comedies.
Hulu has also ordered the Original comedy Reboot, from creator and executive producer Steve Levitan and 20th Television to series. Judy Greer will star opposite the previously-announced Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Knoxville, replacing Leslie Bibb in the role of Bree.
Steeped in the irony of the television industry’s continuing inclination to “reboot” hit shows from the past, the series begins when Hulu reboots an early 2000’s family sitcom, forcing its dysfunctional cast back together. Now they must deal with their unresolved issues in today’s fast-changing world.
“Steve’s incredible track record speaks for itself,” said Hulu’s Head of Scripted Content Jordan Helman. “Modern Family was brilliant and massively appealing, making millions upon millions of viewers laugh week-after-week and quickly becoming a global sensation. We’re honored that Hulu will be home to Steve’s return to television with Reboot and given our slate of successful comedies such as Only Murders in the Building, Pen15, Ramy and more, we know our viewers will devour this hilariously meta satire.”
“Steve Levitan is a comedy genius and his idea for Reboot is as hilarious as it is timely,” added 20th Television President Karey Burke. “We’re thrilled that our friends at Hulu love this sly, wildly funny look at the television comedy business as much as we do. And the spectacular cast Steve’s assembled speaks to both the quality of the writing and the appeal of this platform as a home for smart, high quality television. Everyone jumped at the chance to come on board.”
“After working thirty years in TV comedy, this is both my love letter to sitcoms and, if I’m being honest, much-needed therapy,” said creator and exec producer Steve Levitan.
The series will feature an all-star lineup of comedic talent including Keegan-Michael Key as Reed Sterling, a fussy actor on the fictitious family multi-cam sitcom, “Step Right Up,” who graduated from the Yale school of drama and resents the show for ruining his career. Johnny Knoxville plays Clay Barber, a dark and filthy standup comedian who’s only real acting job was on the same bright and sunny sitcom.
Judy Greer portrays Bree Marie Larson, a small-town pageant girl who always dreamed of being an actress and a princess and both somehow came true; Rachel Bloom is sitcom writer with a “fresh take,” Hannah; Calum Worthy plays Zack, the hyphenate movie star/hip-hop artist; and Krista Marie Yu is a tech exec turned television creative exec, Elaine.
Series creator Steve Levitan will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner. John Enbom, Danielle Stokdyk and Jeff Morton also serve as executive producers. Reboot is produced by 20th Television for Hulu.
And Disney’s Onyx Collective has ordered the limited series The Plot from Endeavor Content. The eight-episode series will stream on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories. The series is an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by Jean Hanff Korelitz.
The Plot stars and is executive produced by Oscar, Emmy, BAFTA and NAACP Image Award-winning actor and producer Mahershala Ali (Swan Song, Green Book, Moonlight). Ali will produce along with executive producers Mimi Valdés and Amatus Karim Ali through their Know Wonder production company
Abby Ajayi (Riches, Inventing Anna, How to Get Away with Murder) adapts Korelitz’s novel as executive producer and showrunner. Endeavor Content will produce the series along with Layne Eskridge’s POV and Kristen Campo. Both Eskridge and Campo played a key part in putting the series together.
The Plot is a gripping cat and mouse story. Struggling author Jake (Ali) is primed to take advantage of any opportunity that might help revive his career. When a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself, Jake commits an act of literary theft that changes his life irrevocably. Now, someone knows his secret and is threatening him… and we will see just how far Jake will go to protect himself and the life he’s built.
“I was captivated with Hanff Korelitz’s book, ‘The Plot’ and Abby’s distinct point of view reinvents the story in a way that spoke to me and our mission at Onyx Collective. There are so many interesting angles and nuances, that having the creative genius that is Mahershala Ali at the center of this mystery, is just a dream,” stated Tara Duncan, president of Freeform and Onyx Collective.
“Kristen and Layne have done a phenomenal job bringing this team together and I could not be more proud to work alongside them and Endeavor Content to bring this incredible series to our global audience.”
“Hollywood is still not greenlighting enough projects with multidimensional Black characters, stories that simply focus on our humanity. The rarity of a straight-to-series order, especially for BIPOC projects, is not lost on us,” said Mimi Valdés, executive producer, Know Wonder. “We are beyond humbled to work with such an amazing team of collaborators to bring this incredible book to life.”
“When Kristen Campo sent me ‘The Plot,’ I devoured it! I’ve been dying to work with Abby Ajayi, and we loved the idea of exploring Jean’s book from the perspective of a Black man, so that we could really debate the themes of authorship, inspiration and who has the right to tell what stories. Mahershala was our dream for the role, and when he and the Know Wonder team signed on, it confirmed that we were building something next level,” said Layne Eskridge, EP, POV Entertainment.
“I’m thrilled to be adapting Jean’s brilliantly compelling and thrilling novel, which hooked me from its opening pages. From the start, I knew that the peerless Mahershala Ali would be the perfect Jake. I’m excited by the nuance, the humanity and the complexity he’ll bring to the role, said Abby Ajayi, EP/showrunner. “Going on this journey with Layne, Kristen and the teams at Know Wonder and Endeavor Content has been a dream. The icing on the cake is finding our home with Tara Duncan at Onyx.”
“When I first read ‘The Plot,’ I was immediately drawn in by Jean’s ability to balance propulsive storytelling and deep character work, and saw the possibility of a fantastic screen adaptation for a global audience,” said Kristen Campo, EP.
