Hulu Developing Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments

Hulu‘s TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale has garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards. Now Atwood’s sequel, The Testaments, is about to be published, and Hulu and MGM are set to adapt that as well.

The novel will be published by Penguin Random House on September 10 (buy here) and takes place 15 years after the events of the first book, which the first season of The Handmaid’s Tale covered. Hulu and MGM are reportedly in discussion with the series showrunner Bruce Miller about how to adapt the sequel.

“Margaret Atwood is a literary icon who continues to delight and challenge readers through her provocative and compelling prose,” said Steve Stark, president of television production at MGM. “She has been an incredible creative partner and resource to MGM throughout the production of Handmaid’s and we look forward to working with her on the story’s exciting next chapter.”

Craig Erwich, senior VP of originals at Hulu, added: “Margaret Atwood is one of the visionary storytellers of her generation. From her award-winning poetry, short-stories and novels, Margaret has continually pushed boundaries and broken barriers to bring innovative stories to life.”

Here is the official synopsis for the book: “When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her—freedom, prison or death. With ‘The Testaments,’ the wait is over.

Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story more than fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.”
