Netflix has released the official Hillbilly Elegy trailer, which previews the Ron Howard film opening in select theaters in November and coming to the streaming service on November 24. They’re also giving us a first look at the series Firefly Lane today.
J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso), a former Marine from southern Ohio and current Yale Law student, is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the home he’s tried to forget. J.D. must navigate the complex dynamics of his Appalachian family, including his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), who’s struggling with addiction.
Fueled by memories of his grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close), the resilient and whip-smart woman who raised him, J.D. comes to embrace his family’s indelible imprint on his own personal journey.
Based on J.D. Vance’s #1 New York Times bestseller (buy at Amazon) and directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard, Hillbilly Elegy is a powerful personal memoir that offers a window into one family’s personal journey of survival and triumph.
By following three colorful generations through their unique struggles, J.D.’s family story explores the highs and lows that define his family’s experience.
Written by Vanessa Taylor, the film is executive produced by Diana Pokorny, Julie Oh, William M. Connor, and J.D. Vance. The producers are Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Karen Lunder.

Netflix today also released first-look photos and a teaser trailer for the upcoming series Firefly Lane, launching in 2021. The series is based on the novel of the same name (buy at Amazon) by New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah, who serves as co-executive producer.
Creator Maggie Friedman serves as showrunner and executive producer along with executive producers Peter O’Fallon, Katherine Heigl, Shawn Williamson and Lee Rose.
The greatest love story of all can be between friends. When unlikely duo Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) meet at age fourteen, they couldn’t be more different. Tully is the brash and bold girl you can’t ignore, while Kate is the mousy shy girl you never notice.
But when a tragedy brings them together, they are bonded for life — forever inseparable best friends. Together they experience thirty years of ups and downs — triumphs and disappointments, heartbreak and joy, and a love triangle that strains their friendship.
One goes on to fabulous wealth and fame, the other chooses marriage and motherhood — but through the decades, their bond remains — until it faces the ultimate test.
Along with Heigl and Chalke, Ben Lawson (Johnny), Ali Skovbye (Young Tully), Roan Curtis (Young Kate), Yael Yurman (Marah) and Beau Garrett (Cloud) star in the series.
