Henry Cavill, who just signed to play Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, will no longer appear as Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cavill has played the superhero in 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and 2017’s Justice League. He most recently starred opposite Tom Cruise in the hit sequel Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
The trade says that Warner Bros. Pictures had been trying to sign Henry Cavill for a cameo in the upcoming Shazam! movie, but talks apparently broke down and “the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.”
Warner Bros. Pictures released the following statement after the news broke: “While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”
The studio is said to instead be focusing on the recently-announced Supergirl movie, which will have a script by Oren Uziel (upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog, The Cloverfield Paradox, 22 Jump Street). The film will be an origin movie.
Cavill will be joining Ben Affleck, who also isn’t expected to reprise the role of Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming stand-alone film, on the way out.
Justice League cast members that will carry on include: Gal Gadot, who is returning for the highly-anticipated Wonder Woman 1984; Jason Momoa, who is appearing in December’s Aquaman; and Ezra Miller, who is expected to star in a Flash movie and may start filming in early 2019.
Henry Cavill’s agent, Dany Garcia, claims the actor is still Superman, pointing to the Warner Bros. statement you can read above. However, Warner Bros.’ statement didn’t really say anything beyond them just addressing the situation.
Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. @wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.

Henry Cavill has also responded to the news in a truly bizarre way on Instagram, not really giving fans an answer whether he’ll be back as Superman.
