A Wrinkle in Time and Belle star Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined the upcoming film Seacole for the newly-created production company Racing Green Pictures. The new company is helmed by producer Billy Peterson (Shenandoah, Ping Pong Summer). The company announced its creation today with the start of production of its new humanitarian film Seacole.
Raw will play Mary Seacole, a pioneering Jamaican nurse who became known during the Crimean War for her care of wounded British soldiers. Seacole’s self-sacrifice on the front lines and fierce, adversarial relationship with Florence Nightingale during the war made her famous in her time.
Also starring will be Sam Worthington, Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049), Sean Delaney (Killing Eve), and Numan Acar (Aladin, Homeland). Seacole is helmed by acclaimed theater and film director Charlie Stratton (In Secret), with the screenplay written by Academy Award nominee Dianne Houston (Take the Lead), Marnie Dickens (Ripper Street), and Stratton. The movie is produced by Academy Award nominee Brunson Green (The Help) of Harbinger Pictures, Hilary Shor (Children of Men, Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Peter Bevan and Karl Richards.
The film will shoot over the next two months in Malta, Romania and London.
Said Billy Peterson, “Mary Seacole was an extraordinary woman, and I’m proud to bring her story to today’s audiences with the hope that they will be inspired by her kindness and tenacity. SEACOLE perfectly encapsulates the mission of Racing Green Pictures, which is to use first-class filmmaking to tell important stories, and I look forward to both this film and to other exciting projects in the near future.”
