Greenland Release Date Pushed Back by STXfilms

Following the delays of Wonder Woman 1984 and Candyman, STXfilms is also pushing back the Greenland release date to later this year. Previously scheduled for September 25, the movie will now open sometime in the fourth quarter.

Greenland has opened #1 in 13 markets overseas and has generated approximately $12.5 million internationally to date. The disaster thriller has performed better in overseas territories than the Angel Has Fallen series and Geostorm, which also star Gerard Butler.

With the Greenland release date change, the next earliest big releases will now be Connected and Death on the Nile, which are both scheduled to open in theaters on October 23. That could certainly change as well, of course.

Greenland stars Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Ford, Theodore Scott Glenn, David Denman, Hope Davis, Andrew Bachelor, and Joshua Mikel.

In Greenland, a family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary.

Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garrity’s experience the best and worst in humanity. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.

The movie is directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen) from a script by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune. Principal photography for the film started in May of 2019.

Greenland is produced by Thunder Road Films’ Basil Iwanyk (Sicario, John Wick), who also developed the project, with Butler and Alan Siegel via their G-BASE production company. Anton is fully financing and producing.

Ric Roman Waugh’s credits also include Shot Caller, starring Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. He wrote and directed the thriller Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Michael K. Williams, Benjamin Bratt, Jon Bernthal and Melina Kanakaredes. Prior to that, Waugh helmed Felon, from his own screenplay for Sony.

It was announced in June that Butler and Ric Roman Waugh will reteam for the action thriller Kandahar. Butler will play Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative working in the Middle East. Stuck in the heart of hostile territory, Harris and his translator must fight their way out of the desert to an extraction point in Kandahar while eluding the elite special forces hunting them.
