Home TV Gossip Girl Reboot in Development for HBO Max Streaming Service

Gossip Girl Reboot in Development for HBO Max Streaming Service

WarnerMedia has announced it is working on a Gossip Girl reboot for the upcoming HBO Max streaming service. The series will be based on the book by Cecily von Ziegesar.

The original series ran on The CW network for six seasons from 2007 to 2012. Narrated by Kristen Bell, the series starred Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Kelly Rutherford, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, Taylor Momsen, Jessica Szohr, Matthew Settle, and Kaylee DeFer.

The Gossip Girl reboot is officially described as follows: “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years.”

WarnerMedia has ordered the show direct to series, committing to 10 one-hour episodes. The writer and executive producer is Joshua Safran of Random Acts. Executive producing are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire, and Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo of Alloy Entertainment. The co-executive producer is Lis Rowinski of Fake Empire.

The companies behind the new series are Fake Empire and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.

Earlier this month, WarnerMedia unveiled that HBO Max will be the name of its new streaming service, which will offer a direct-to-consumer experience for everyone ranging from families with young children to adults of all ages. Anchored with and inspired by the legacy of HBO’s excellence and award-winning storytelling, the new service will be “Maximized” with an extensive collection of exclusive original programming (Max Originals) and the best-of-the-best from WarnerMedia’s enormous portfolio of beloved brands and libraries.

HBO Max, scheduled to launch commercially in spring of 2020, is anticipated to premiere with 10,000 hours of premium content.
