Video game developer Telltale Games announced today it has begun the process of shutting down. The company, which was founded in June 2004 by Kevin Bruner, Dan Connors and Troy Molander, had about 250 employees before today. Most of Telltale’s products were adventure games based on licensed properties from film, comics, television, and other video games.

“Today Telltale Games made the difficult decision to begin a majority studio closure following a year marked by insurmountable challenges,” the company said in a statement. “A majority of the company’s employees were dismissed earlier this morning, with a small group of 25 employees staying on to fulfill the company’s obligations to its board and partners.”

CEO Pete Hawley issued the following statement:

“It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.”

Telltale said it will issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks. The company debuted The Walking Dead: The Final Season last month, with the second episode scheduled to be released on September 25. Other titles that were reportedly in development were Stranger Things and the second season of The Wolf Among Us.

The company’s titles have included Batman: The Enemy Within, Minecraft: Story Mode, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Batman: The Telltale Series, Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands, Jurassic Park, and more.
