The Walt Disney Studios is reporting that the Frozen II box office has already reached $350.2 million worldwide after just five days! Of that figure, $127 million came from 4,440 North American theaters and $223.2 million from overseas markets. The film received a strong A- CinemaScore from domestic audiences.
Domestically, the $127 million is a new November animation record and is the biggest opening ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios, as well as for any animated film outside of summer, and the No. 3 animated debut of all time. It significantly surpasses the first Frozen’s Thanksgiving five-day debut of $93 million in 2013.
Internationally, Frozen II opened No. 1 everywhere for an estimated total of $223 million from 37 material markets. It set numerous records, including the third-highest industry opening ever in Korea, the highest opening weekend ever for an animated title in France and the UK (three day), the third-highest opening weekend ever for an animated title in China and the highest opening weekend ever for a Disney Animation/Pixar title in Japan, China, Spain and Germany. The top market was China with $53 million, and that was followed by Korea with $31.5 million, Japan with $18.2 million, the UK with $17.8 million, Germany with $14.9 million, and France with $13.4 million.
Frozen II also became the all-time biggest IMAX opening for an animated film, earning $18 million globally this weekend and besting Incredibles 2’s $15.6 million. Domestically, the sequel earned $8.4 million to become the second-highest IMAX animated opening behind only Incredibles 2 ($14.6 million).
The sequel comes from the Academy Award-winning team — directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, and producer Peter Del Vecho — and features the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, and the music of Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.
