Overlord director Julius Avery has been set to direct the upcoming revamp of the classic pulp film Flash Gordon, according to Deadline. Avery will also write the script for the film. Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) was originally in the running to direct, but he will now produce the film with John Davis and Hearst.
Avery is known for directing Son of a Gun with Alicia Vikander and Ewan McGregor. Overlord is a horror film from Paramount and J.J. Abrams that premiered at Fantastic Feast. It is set for a November 9 release.
Flash Gordon has been on the big screen before. The film debuted in 1980 and was a campy classic based on the comic strip, which was created by Alex Raymond. The film starred Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Topol, Max von Sydow, Timothy Dalton, Brian Blessed and Ornella Muti and featured lines like “Flash! I love you, but we only have 14 hours to save the Earth!” Flash Gordon is a New York Jets football star who becomes a superhero when the villain Ming the Merciless threatens the world. Sam Jones and Flash Gordon were mentioned quite a bit in the film Ted, and Jones appeared as himself. The 1980 film was directed by Mike Hodges and produced by Dino De Laurentiis.
