With the action thriller bringing in a huge amount of viewers (it’s projected to be watched by 90 million households over four weeks), Netflix today confirmed that Extraction 2 is in the works with the first film’s writer, Joe Russo, returning to pen another installment. Deadline reports that Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO returning to produce.
The Russos are said to be optimistic that stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave will be back in the direcotr’s chair, while Chris Hemsworth will reprise the role of Tyler Rake.
“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Joe Russo said. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”
“There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal,” added. “What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.”
Extraction launched on the streaming service on April 24. The film was produced by the Russo brothers, who directed the Marvel Studios films Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
In the film, Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) is a fearless black market mercenary who embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.
Extraction also stars Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, Priyanshu Painyuli, and David Harbour.
Mike Larocca, Hemsworth, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin also produced. Filming took place in India and Thailand.
The movie is officially described as follows: “Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is a fearless black market mercenary with nothing left to lose when his skills are solicited to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.
“But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible, forever altering the lives of Rake and the boy.”
Extraction comes from AGBO Films and TGIM Films, Inc. AGBO’s projects include the television show Deadly Class and feature films 21 Bridges and the upcoming Cherry.
