Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on February 26, 2021.
Inspired by true events, the film adaptation of the hit musical Everybody’s Talking about Jamie follows Jamie New, who is 16 and doesn’t quite fit in — instead of pursuing a “real” career, he dreams of becoming a drag queen.
In the New Regency and Film4 movie, Jamie is uncertain about his future but knows one thing for sure: he is going to be a sensation. Supported by his loving mom and his amazing friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie stars newcomer Max Harwood, Sarah Lancashire, Lauren Patel, Shobna Gulati, Ralph Ineson, Adeel Akhtar, Samuel Bottomley, with Sharon Horgan and Richard E. Grant.
The stage production’s director, Jonathan Butterell, makes his feature-film debut as director, with a screenplay and lyrics by Tom MacRae, songs by Dan Gillespie Sells and a score composed by Sells and Anne Dudley.
Mark Herbert, p.g.a, Peter Carlton, p.g.a, and Arnon Milchan are producing with Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Natalie Lehmann, Daniel Battsek, Ollie Madden, Peter Balm, Niall Shamma, and Jes Wilkins serving as executive producers.
Inspired by the BBC documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, the stage production originated at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, before it was picked up by Nimax Theatres and transferred to London’s West End.
“Who would have thought when Jamie Campbell first put on his prom dress, that eight years later we would have brought together the best of British and Irish acting talent to tell his story,” said Butterell previously.
“We are incredibly excited to be bringing this poignant story to screen and are fortunate to be working with such an immensely talented group of actors and filmmakers. We know Jamie’s story will resonate with audiences on a critical and commercial basis,” commented Yariv Milchan, New Regency’s Chairman.
After receiving over 3000 applications from the open casting call, newcomer Max Harwood was cast in the title role of Jamie New. This is his first professional role.
Following a year’s search for Jamie’s classmates via regional casting calls and outreach, 20 young locals from Yorkshire and the surrounding regions were cast.
