Esai Morales Joins the Next Two Mission: Impossible Movies

Filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has revealed that actor Esai Morales has joined the cast of the next two Mission: Impossible movies. In his post on socials, McQuarrie only says “We all face the same fate… #MI7MI8,” though we know that Morales is replacing Nicholas Hoult as the villain in the films. Hoult had to leave the production due to scheduling conflicts.

Esai Morales has starred in such series as American Family, Caprica, From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, NYPD Blue, Ozark, and Resurrection Blvd. He most recently played Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in DC Universe series Titans. On the big screen, he has appeared in such films as Bad Boys, La Bamba, Ultraviolet, and The Wall of Mexico.

In addition to Esai Morales, the cast of the next two films includes Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Shea Whigham.

Writer and director Christopher McQuarrie is returning to write and direct the next two Mission: Impossible movies, with the seventh and eighth films arriving on November 19, 2021 and November 4, 2022. Skydance Media founder and CEO David Ellison will again produce.

Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT,

Filming for the two Mission: Impossible movies had started in February but was put on hold due to current events. It was previously said that the films would be shot back-to-back, though the studio has not confirmed if that is the case.

McQuarrie recently told the Light the Fuse podcast that they decided to do two movies in order to tell Ethan Hunt’s story. “When we went into making Fallout, I said to Tom, ‘I really want to make this more of an emotional journey for [Hunt].’ Going into this, I said, ‘I want to take what we learned from Fallout and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc.”

He added that Hayley Atwell’s character will be a “destructive force of nature” in the films. “In this [film], we’ve found something really, really great for the core team. What I can tell you is that they then encounter this other destructive force of nature in the form of Hayley.”

“There’s ambiguity… the interesting thing we’re exploring is her resistance to a situation she finds herself in. How she starts off, where she becomes. The journey of what she comes into and what is asked of her and potentially where she ends up.”

McQuarrie has written and directed the last two films, which were both big hits. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was released in 2015 and earned $682.7 million worldwide, while Mission: Impossible – Fallout grossed $791.1 million globally last year and is the biggest film in the franchise.

In Fallout, on a dangerous assignment to recover stolen plutonium, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) chooses to save his friends over the mission, allowing it to fall into the hands of a deadly network of highly skilled operatives intent on destroying civilization.

Now, with the world at risk, Ethan and his IMF team (Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson) are forced to work with a hard-hitting CIA agent (Henry Cavill) as they race against time to stop the nuclear threat.

The film also stars Sean Harris, Angela Bassett, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin.
