Dwayne Johnson on Hobbs and Shaw Sequel, Black Adam & More

Dwayne Johnson has been providing his fans with some great updates on his social channels during this challenging time. In his entertaining Instagram Live yesterday, Johnson answered questions such as whether there’s going to be a Hobbs and Shaw sequel, what the status of Black Adam is, and much more.

Before we get to those films, there’s a few other things he addressed. He said it’s not certain yet that Disney’s Jungle Cruise, co-starring Emily Blunt, will make its July 24, 2020 release date. “We’ll see,” he said. The release will depend on “if we’re able to flatten this curve” and making sure moviegoers “have the emotional confidence to get back into theaters again.”

Johnson also commented on Netflix’s Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, the streaming service’s new docuseries which is all the rage right now. Johnson said he wanted to buy the film rights to Tiger King for his Seven Buck Productions, but someone else had already snatched them up.

The former professional wrestler also mentioned that he’s excited about an all-female Fast and Furious spin-off that will be produced by Vin Diesel. That would be the second spin-off following the successful Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (buy at Amazon), which grossed nearly $760 million worldwide last year.

Johnson mentioned that the Hobbs and Shaw sequel is actively in development. The actor said (via ScreenRant): “We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I’m pretty excited about it… Just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go.”

Directed by David Leitch, Hobbs and Shaw had Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) having to team up to fight the cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton Lorr, played by (Idris Elba). The action movie also stars Vanessa Kirby, Eiza González, Cliff Curtis, and Helen Mirren.

Johnson was also expected to start shooting the Black Adam movie this summer for a December 22, 2021 release, but we’ll have to wait and see if that happens. “I’m very excited about Black Adam,” he said. “I’ve been training very, very hard for that role. We were supposed to start shooting it in the summer, in July, and we’ll see. I’m not quite too sure if it’s still gonna happen – or, at least, if we’ll still start shooting in July, but it will all work out the way it’s meant to work out.”

Johnson was filming Netflix’s Red Notice with Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds when things came to a halt, so he presumably would have to finish that project first. In the separate, below Instagram post, Johnson talked a lot more about what the character means to him, how long its taken to get the movie made, and why now is the right time.

Black Adam Comics

Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra will direct New Line’s Black Adam, based on the DC Comics character for New Line Cinema. Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo will produce along with Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions. Scott Sheldon will oversee for FlynnPicturesCo. Adam Sztykiel wrote the latest draft of the script.

Johnson previously said the villain and antihero Black Adam was originally supposed to have debuted in Shazam!, but it wasn’t working with them having to tell the origin stories of both Shazam! and Black Adam.
