Comic book writer Donny Cates has revealed that he has finished the God Country script and turned it into Legendary Entertainment, which previously acquired the worldwide film rights. Cates says in a tweet: “God Country screenplay is in the can. Man, that was a blast. I absolutely LOVED writing a movie. Now I want to do it again!”
The movie will be based on the acclaimed graphic novel, which was written by Cates and illustrated by Geoff Shaw. The project marks the first time Lee and Jon Kramer of AfterShock Media will produce a project outside of their line of titles and will be the second collaboration for Legendary and AfterShock. Jon Silk brought the project in and is overseeing with Jay Ashenfelter for Legendary Entertainment.
In God Country, Emmett Quinlan is an elderly widower rattled by dementia. Emmett isn’t just a problem for his children — his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home — as well as the surrounding West Texas town–a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. An enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…
God Country was originally published in 2017 by Image Comics to critical acclaim. The first issue immediately sold out and had to be reprinted four times before being collected in trade paperback.
Cates’ past works also include Babyteeth from AfterShock Comics, Buzzkill from Dark Horse, and Redneck from Image.
