Disney Moves Soul Release Date, Plus Raya and the Last Dragon

-

Just 10 days ago, The Walt Disney Company announced its new schedule due to current events and we were wondering whether the Soul release date would hold. The studio has now revealed that it is moving Soul from June 19, 2020 to November 20, 2020.

With the Soul release date change, Disney is also moving Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon from November 25, 2020 to March 12, 2021.

Soul features the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Angela Bassett, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, and Daveed Diggs. In the movie, Joe Gardner is a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth.

Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22, who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.

The Pixar movie is directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter (Inside Out, Up), co-directed by Kemp Powers (One Night in Miami) and produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray (Pixar short Lou).

Globally renowned musician Jon Batiste will be writing original jazz music for the film, and Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network), from Nine Inch Nails, will compose an original score that will drift between the real and soul worlds.

Fantasy action adventure Raya and the Last Dragon is directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins (Big Hero 6, Frozen), produced by Osnat Shurer (Moana) and written by Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians).

In the film, Raya, a lone warrior from the fantasy kingdom of Kumandra, teams up with a crew of misfits in her quest to find the Last Dragon and bring light and unity back to their world.

Awkwafina lends her voice to Sisu, the Last Dragon, who was left on Earth in case dark forces return to the world, and Cassie Steele voices the lead character, Raya.

The film explores themes of community and hope, and is inspired by the beautiful and diverse cultures of Southeast Asia.
