The cast of the Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ third Spider-Man movie continues to grow, with word coming from The Hollywood Reporter that Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Doctor Strange in the film!
Scheduled for a December 17, 2021 release, the third Spider-Man movie will again be directed by Jon Watts. Cast members expected to return include Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, and J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson.
Also on board is the recently-announced Jamie Foxx, who played the villain Electro in the The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield as Spidey.
According to THR, “the move puts Cumberbatch in the mentor role that was previously occupied by Robert Downey Jr., who played Tony Stark/Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and by Samuel L. Jackson in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the latter reprising Nick Fury.”
They add: “The role gives Holland a chance to play opposite seasoned actors, gives Peter Parker a father figure and gives the movies extra star power while also tying them to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
The third Spider-Man movie is scheduled to begin shooting in Atlanta later in October, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will also begin shooting this month in London.
Cumberbatch and Holland first met up as Doctor Strange and Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War.
Sony and Marvel Studios have worked together on two Spidey films, including Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. The first film grossed $880.2 million worldwide, while last year’s release earned an impressive $1.13 billion globally.
Released in July of 2019, Spider-Man: Far From Home was directed by Spider-Man: Homecoming helmer Jon Watts. In the film, our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation.
However, Peter’s plans to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks. Spider-Man and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) join forces to fight the havoc unleashed across the continent, but all is not as it seems.
The well-received Far From Home also starred Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan.
