Chris Messina (Sharp Objects, Argo) has been cast in the Warner Bros./DC film Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), according to Deadline. He’ll play the role of Victor Zsasz, a villain working with Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).
In addition, more cast members were announced, including Steven Williams (The Chi), Derek Wilson (Future Man), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Tick) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). Their roles are unclear at this time.
Victor Zsasz first appeared in the comics in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1 in 1992. He’s a serial killer who marks his body for each of his victims. He’s been voiced by Danny Jacobs in the Batman: Arkham Asylum video games and Anthony Carrigan plays the role on the series Gotham.
Zsasz became suicidal after the death of his parents and while attempting to kill himself, he was attacked by a homeless man. He killed the man, thinking he was offering him a “gift” since the man had given up. He continues this pattern with everyone he kills, marking his body for each one.
The cast of Birds of Prey includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as the villain Black Mask.
Birds of Prey will have Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary teaming up to protect Cain when she comes across a diamond belonging to Black Mask, a kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.
Cathy Yan will direct the Warner Bros. release from a script by Christina Hodson. Birds of Prey will be produced by Robbie, Kroll & Co Entertainment’s Sue Kroll, and Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless. Warner Bros. and DC have set a February 7, 2020 release date for the film.
