Cats and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot MPAA Ratings Revealed

-

The MPAA has given two very different ratings for the upcoming Cats movie and Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot today. Universal Pictures‘ Cats was rated PG for “peril, some thematic elements and rude humor,” while the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot MPAA rating is R for “pervasive strong crude sexual content, language throughout, drug use and some nudity.”

Directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables, The Danish Girl), the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-shattering stage musical Cats stars James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and introduces Royal Ballet principal dancer Francesca Hayward in her feature film debut. The film is opening in theaters on December 20, 2019.

Cats is produced by Debra Hayward, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Tom Hooper. The screenplay is by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Rocketman) and Hooper, based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot and the stage musical by Lloyd Webber. Cats is executive produced by Lloyd Webber, Steven Spielberg, Angela Morrison and Jo Burn.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. In the 2001 movie, Jay and Silent Bob find out Hollywood is making a movie about them titled Bluntman and Chronic. They travel across the country to stop that movie from happening. In Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, the two find out that Hollywood is making a reboot of that old movie about them (with Supergirl star Melissa Benoist playing Chronic). They travel across the country to stop it all over again.

Jason Mewes and Smith are reprising the lead roles, alongside a number of returning players from the star-studded cast of the original movie, as well as a fresh new crop of cameos from the worlds of movies, TV, music and podcasting. The new movie will skewer reboots, remakes, and sequels while simultaneously being all three at the same time. Jordan Monsanto of Smodco is producing alongside Destro Film’s Liz Destro.

Fathom Events and Saban Films are bringing Jay and Silent Bob Reboot to more than 600 U.S. movie theaters on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. local time with a special pre-recorded video introduction from Mewes and Smith. The first 50 people at each location on October 15 will receive a limited-edition poster (while supplies last). Then on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. local time, audiences will see a special double feature of Miramax’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Both evenings will also feature exclusive bonus content.
