Captain Marvel Soars to $20.7 Million from Thursday Previews

Marvel Studios‘ Captain Marvel blasted off with an estimated $20.7 million from Thursday previews domestically, landing as the fifth-biggest preview gross for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title, behind only the second and third Avengers films, Black Panther, and Captain America: Civil War and surpassing the preview grosses of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($17M), Spider-Man: Homecoming ($15.4M) and Thor: Ragnarok ($14.5M). The film opens across the US and Canada today in 4,310 theaters.

Internationally, Captain Marvel has earned an estimated $44 million in just two days. It began rolling out Wednesday in 18 material markets (including Korea, France and Italy), followed by an additional 24 yesterday (including Germany, Russia, Australia and Brazil). Today, in addition to its North American debut, Captain Marvel opens in China, UK, Mexico and Spain along with Iceland, Poland, South Africa, Turkey, India, Vietnam, Venezuela and Ecuador, meaning that it will be open in all international markets this weekend except for Japan, where it will open on March 15).

The international number does not include China yet, but early estimates indicate an opening day of around $34 million, which would be the second-biggest MCU opening day there behind only Avengers: Infinity War.
