Cuban-American singer and songwriter Camila Cabello will make her feature acting debut in Blockers director Kay Cannon’s upcoming Cinderella movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cabello will also be heavily involved in the creation of the music for the Sony Pictures release.
The film is said to be “a modern re-imagining of the traditional tale of the orphaned girl with an evil step-mother with a musical bent thrown in for good measure.”
The trade says that the idea for the new Cinderella movie came from James Corden, who is producing the film with Leo Pearlman, his partner at Fulwell 73 (The Class of ’92, Bros: After the Screaming Stops, Carpool Karaoke).
Cabella rose to fame as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which formed on The X Factor in 2012. She left the group in December 2016 and released her first solo single, “Crying in the Club,” in May 2017. Her debut studio album, Camila, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with its lead single “Havana” topping the charts in various countries. The second single, “Never Be the Same,” also reached the top 10 in several countries.
Kay Cannon’s credits also include writing the Pitch Perfect films, writing and producing 30 Rock, and co-executive producing and writing New Girl. She also created the Netflix series Girlboss.
