With very positive reviews for the movie, things are looking great for a possible Bumblebee sequel, but producer Tom DeSanto says a solo Optimus Prime movie isn’t out of the question either. Talking to Syfy Wire, DeSanto said the following about a possible Optimus Prime film: “I know Peter wants his own [solo film], Peter Cullen.”
As far as a Bumblebee sequel, DeSanto said that he hopes there will be one, as “there’s a lot of love left in these characters.” Fellow producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura added that “if the audience shows up for it, yeah for sure, we’ll definitely do one. There’s a lot of places you can take Bumblebee because he’s so accessible as a character.”
Bumblebee takes place in the year 1987, where, on the run, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
In addition to Steinfeld, the film stars John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, Pamela Adlon, and Stephen Schneider. It was recently announced that Bumblebee will be voiced by Dylan O’Brien in the film.
Directed by Travis Knight from a script by Christina Hodson and Kelly Fremon Craig, film’s producers are Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Tom DeSanto & Don Murphy, and Michael Bay, and the executive producers are Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner, Mark Vahradian, and Chris Brigham.
Paramount Pictures will release the film in theaters on December 21.
