Avatar: The Way of Water Surpasses $1 Billion Worldwide

After a strong second weekend and Monday, Tuesday was another extremely successful day for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water at the global box office.

The film earned an estimated $23.8 million at the domestic box office on Tuesday to bring its North American total to $317.1 million.

International, Avatar: The Way of Water added $50.8 million yesterday and has now earned $712.7 million, for a global total of $1.030 billion after just 14 days in release. The movie is the fastest to cross the $1 billion mark since Spider-Man: No Way Home did in December 2021.

The sequel is now only the sixth film ever to cross the $1 billion mark in its first two weeks of release and fourth Disney release to do so.

Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed Jurassic World Dominion to become the No. 2 release of 2022 globally and is closing in on Top Gun: Maverick‘s international total of $770 million. Once passed, it will make The Way of Water the No. 1 international release of 2022.

The top-grossing overseas markets include China ($108.2 million), France ($68.2 million), Korea ($57.4 million), Germany ($46.5 million), India ($40.7 million), and the UK ($37.2 million).

There’s also Mexico ($29.5 million), Australia ($25.2 million), Italy ($12.7 million), Brazil ($23.8 million), Spain ($20.3 million), Brazil ($19 million), and Indonesia ($12.9 million).

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet.

The first Avatar still holds the record for biggest box office of all time with $2.923 billion, with $785.2 million coming from North American theaters and $2.138 billion from international markets.

Following Avatar: The Way of Water, the third installment, Avatar: The Seed Bearer (Working Title), will be released by 20th Century Studios on December 20, 2024.

Then Avatar: The Tulkun Rider (Working Title) and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa (Working Title) are coming to theaters on December 18, 2026 and December 22, 2028, respectively.
