Avatar 2 Plot Teased by Producer Jon Landau

-

Last week, producer Jon Landau announced that production on the Avatar sequels would continue this week. Now, Landau has revealed a few more secrets about the James Cameron films, including what you can expect from the Avatar 2 plot.

Before getting into the Avatar 2 plot, he told RNZ that they are bringing back far fewer people than they had last year when they were doing live-action filming. “We’re bringing really those who are essential to our filming needs and we’ll be working with the same crew that we had in New Zealand.”

Landau said the following about the story: “This is the story of the Sully family and what one does to keep their family together. Jake and Neytiri have a family in this movie, they are forced to leave their home, they go out and explore the different regions of Pandora, including spending quite a bit of time on the water, around the water, in the water.”

He added: “I think, why do people turn to entertainment today, more so than ever? I think it’s to escape, to escape the world we’re in, to escape the other pressures they have in their lives. I think with Avatar, we have an opportunity to allow people to escape to an incredible world with incredible characters that they will follow, in much the same way as Peter Jackson was able to do with Lord of the Rings, so that’s what we’re looking forward to doing.”

Avatar Vehicles

In addition to giving Avatar 2 plot details, the producer previously shared a few photos from the production, including the Matador, a high speed forward command vessel and the Picador jetboat. You can view both of those vehicles above.

Earlier this month he shared the following photo of Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis at the surface of the 900,000 gallon performance capture tank they built.

Before that, he also revealed a behind the scenes photo of James Cameron giving the actors direction before they dive underwater to capture performances for a scene from the Avatar sequels.

And he began the series of photos with this photo, which shows Landau with Sigourney Weaver and Joel David Moore back in the Site 26 Shack set for some scenes for the new movies.

Avatar 2, expected to be titled Avatar: The Way of Water, is scheduled to be released by Disney’s 20th Century Fox on December 17, 2021. Avatar: The Seed Bearer will follow on December 22, 2023.

Then Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa are coming to theaters on December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver are returning for the Avatar sequels. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, and Jemaine Clement are also on board.

The young members of the Sully family are played by Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, and Trinity Bliss, while the Metkayina Clan members are played by Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, and Duane Evans Jr. Jack Champion is playing Javier “Spider” Socorro, a human teenager, born at Hell’s Gate but who prefers his time in the Pandoran rainforest more than the asphalt of Hell’s Gate.

The Avatar sequels will be produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The James Cameron-directed sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
