For the 2020 Austrian World Summit, Arnold Schwarzenegger sat down to talk to James Cameron to talk about environmental issues. Schwarzenegger also got an update from Cameron about the Avatar 2 filming and where they are with Avatar 3.
In the interview, which you can watch below, the filmmaker says that the live-action Avatar 2 filming is 100% complete, while they are about 95% complete on Avatar 3. He adds that they are very lucky they chose New Zealand as their country for production, as it has ranked at the top for their response to the health crisis. You can check out the interview segment starting at about the 9:22-minute mark.
In related news, Avatar franchise producer Jon Landau has shared more photos from the Avatar 2 filming, and presumably the third movie. You can view the photos by scrolling down.
Avatar 2, expected to be titled Avatar: The Way of Water, is scheduled to be released on December 16, 2022. Avatar: The Seed Bearer will follow on December 20, 2024.
Then Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa are coming to theaters on December 18, 2026 and December 22, 2028.
Landau previously talked about the plot of the sequels. “This is the story of the Sully family and what one does to keep their family together. Jake and Neytiri have a family in this movie, they are forced to leave their home, they go out and explore the different regions of Pandora, including spending quite a bit of time on the water, around the water, in the water.”
He added: “I think, why do people turn to entertainment today, more so than ever? I think it’s to escape, to escape the world we’re in, to escape the other pressures they have in their lives.
“I think with Avatar, we have an opportunity to allow people to escape to an incredible world with incredible characters that they will follow, in much the same way as Peter Jackson was able to do with Lord of the Rings, so that’s what we’re looking forward to doing.”
Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, and Jemaine Clement are also on board.
The young members of the Sully family are played by Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, and Trinity Bliss, while the Metkayina Clan members are played by Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, and Duane Evans Jr.
Jack Champion is playing Javier “Spider” Socorro, a human teenager, born at Hell’s Gate but who prefers his time in the Pandoran rainforest more than the asphalt of Hell’s Gate.
The Avatar sequels will be produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment.
The James Cameron-directed sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
