Apple TV+ announced today that the hit comedy Physical, starring Rose Byrne and created by Annie Weisman, has been picked up for a second season. Apple will also release a filmed version of the award-winning musical Come From Away.
The Physical news comes ahead of this Friday’s season one finale, “Let’s get Together,” in which Sheila entertains an intriguing proposition while Bunny’s finances and Tyler’s health come to a head.
“We couldn’t be more proud to showcase Annie Weisman’s singular take on this darkly funny, heartbreaking and bold story,” said Michelle Lee, director of Domestic Programming, Apple TV+.
“And then we got to watch Rose Byrne inhabit this incredible, multi-layered character, giving us an unforgettable tour de force performance. We have been thrilled to see audiences around the world fall in love and feel seen by this show and we can’t wait for everyone to experience the next chapter in Sheila’s journey towards personal empowerment.”
Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, Physical is a half-hour dark comedy following Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly.
But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image… that is, until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics.
At first hooked on the exercise itself, Sheila’s real road to empowerment comes when she discovers a way to merge this newfound passion with the burgeoning technology of videotape to start a revolutionary business.
Physical tracks her epic journey from a stifled, overlooked enabler to a powerful, confident economic force, as Sheila transforms into someone we take for granted today (but was entirely radical at the time)—the female lifestyle guru.
In addition to Byrne, Physical stars Rory Scovel, Dierdre Friel, Della Saba, Lou Taylor Pucci, Paul Sparks, Ashley Liao and Geoffrey Arend.
The series is produced for Apple TV+ by Tomorrow Studios (an ITV Studios partnership). Created, written and executive produced by Weisman, who also serves as showrunner, Physical is directed by Craig Gillespie and Stephanie Laing, who also serve as executive producers along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements for Tomorrow Studios, Alexandra Cunningham, John McNamara, Sera Gamble and Byrne.
The filmed version of the Tony and Olivier Award-winning hit musical Come From Away will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, September 10. Come From Away is directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley, who directed the original Broadway production, and stars an ensemble cast led by members of the Broadway show.
The original book, music and lyrics were written by Tony and Grammy Award nominees and Olivier Award winners Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who will also serve as executive producers alongside RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen, Dave Sirulnick and Meredith Bennett.
Come From Away tells the story of 7,000 people stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland after all flights into the US are grounded on September 11, 2001. As the people of Newfoundland graciously welcome the “come from aways” into their community in the aftermath, the passengers and locals alike process what’s happened while finding love, laughter and new hope in the unlikely and lasting bonds that they forge.
The live performance of Come From Away was filmed this past May at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City, where the Broadway production is staged, for an audience that included 9/11 survivors and front-line workers; and employed over 200 people including members of the Broadway crew, staff and creative teams.
The cast starring in the live filmed production includes: Petrina Bromley as Bonnie and others; Jenn Colella as Beverley/Annette and others; De’Lon Grant as Bob and others; Joel Hatch as Claude and others; Tony LePage as Kevin T. and others; and Caesar Samayoa as Kevin J./Ali and others.
Also starring are Q. Smith as Hannah and others; Astrid Van Wieren as Beulah and others; Emily Walton as Janice and others; Jim Walton as Nick/Doug and others; Sharon Wheatley as Diane and others; and Paul Whitty as Oz and others.
eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment studio, produced the live capture performance, with Laurel Thomson executive producing on behalf of eOne. Jennifer Todd and Bill Condon serve as producers alongside the original stage producers, Junkyard Dog Productions, as well as Mark Gordon. Brittany Hapner serves as a co-producer. Alchemy Production group provided stage production and general management. RadicalMedia filmed the production.
Come From Away is choreographed by Tony Award nominee and Olivier Award winner Kelly Devine, and music supervision by Olivier Award winner and Grammy Award nominee Ian Eisendrath.
