Angel Has Fallen Tops the Labor Day Holiday Weekend

With moviegoers on vacation and awaiting the Thursday evening opening of the highly-anticipated It Chapter Two, no newcomers entered the top 10 over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Lionsgate and Millennium’s Angel Has Fallen remained in first place with $14.8 million over the four-day weekend, to take its total to $43.9 million after two weeks. Compared to the previous two films, Olympus Has Fallen earned $98.9 million in North America and $170.3 million worldwide, while London Has Fallen made $62.5 million domestic and $205.8 million globally. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the third installment stars Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo, Nick Nolte, and Danny Huston. The film cost $40 million to make.

Also keeping its second place was Universal Pictures‘ R-rated comedy Good Boys, which grossed $11.6 million over the four-day Labor Day holiday weekend and is now up to $58.6 million domestically. Internationally, the movie has brought in $11.7 million and has earned $70.3 million worldwide. Directed by Gene Stupnitsky and made for $20 million, Good Boys stars Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, Brady Noon, Molly Gordon, Lil Rel Howery, and Will Forte.

With another $9.2 million over the four days, Disney’s The Lion King climbed two spots to third and has now grossed $523.5 million domestically after seven weeks. The adaptation of the classic also added $27.3 million internationally and is up to $1.041 billion, for a worldwide sum of $1.564 billion. Directed by Jon Favreau, The Lion King stars Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and James Earl Jones.

Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw didn’t move and kept the fourth spot with $8.1 million over the holiday frame and has now reached $158.9 million in North America. Internationally, the movie has brought in $525.3 million (with $166 million coming from China) and the worldwide sum is $684.2 million. Made for $200 million, the David Leitch-directed film stars Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Vanessa Kirby, Idris Elba, and Helen Mirren.

Dropping two spots to fifth place was faith-based drama Overcomer (AFFIRM Films, Sony Pictures), which added $7.8 million over the four days to take its two-week total to $19.3 million. Directed by Alex Kendrick and made for just $5 million, the movie stars Alex Kendrick, Priscilla Shirer, Shari Rigby, Cameron Arnett, and Aryn Wright-Thompson.

Staying in sixth place was the thriller Ready or Not (Fox Searchlight Pictures) with $6.7 million. Made for just $6 million, the movie has earned $20.5 million after two weeks. Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin directed the movie, which stars Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell.

Climbing a spot to seventh was CBS Films, eOne and Lionsgate’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which collected $6.3 million over the four days and has grossed $58.9 million after four weeks. Made for $25 million and directed by André Øvredal, the adaptation of the Alvin Schwartz book series stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn.

Paramount Pictures’ Dora and the Lost City of Gold also rose a spot to eighth place with $5.7 million and has now earned $51.2 million after four weeks. The big screen adaptation added $4.4 million internationally and is up to $24.1 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $75.3 million. James Bobin directed the $49 million movie, which stars Isabela Moner, Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, Adriana Barraza, Temuera Morrison, Jeffrey Wahlberg, Nicholas Coombe, Madeleine Madden, and Danny Trejo.

Sony Pictures released an extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home this weekend with four additional minutes, which helped the film climb six spots to ninth with $5.5 million. That takes the Spidey movie up to $385.9 million domestically after nine weeks. The movie has also earned $736.2 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $1.122 billion. Made for $160 million and directed by Jon Watts, the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel stars Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, JB Smoove, Jacob Batalon, Martin Star, Marisa Tomei, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Sony also took tenth place with  The Angry Birds Movie 2, which added $5.6 million over the four days and has now earned $35.4 million. The international total is up to $58.5 million and worldwide sum to $93.7 million. The original 2016 film earned $107 million domestically and $244.8 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $352.3 million. Made for $65 million and directed by Thurop Van Orman, The Angry Birds Movie 2 features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, Bill Hader, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, Eugenio Derbez, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, Pete Davidson, Zach Woods, Dove Cameron, Lil Rel Howery, Nicki Minaj, Beck Bennett, Brooklynn Prince, Maya Rudolph, Tony Hale, JoJo Siwa, Gaten Matarazzo, Colleen Ballinger, and David Dobrik.
