Andy Serkis Confirmed as Venom 2 Director

-

A little over a week ago, we learned that Andy Serkis had met with Sony Pictures about becoming the Venom 2 director. Shortly after, Travis Knight (Bumblebee) and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) were also said to have talked to the studio about the job.

Now Serkis has confirmed on his social channels that he has signed a deal to direct and will make it his third feature film, following Breathe and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. He also previously served as second unit director on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films. Serkis is, of course, known as well for his extensive performance capture and voice work in such films as The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, King Kong, the Planet of the Apes films, and Star Wars pics The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. He’s also played Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther.

Ruben Fleischer directed the first movie, which grossed an impressive $856 million worldwide in 2018.

Tom Hardy is set to return as the title character in the Venom sequel, while Michelle Williams will be back as Anne Weying and Woody Harrelson will return as Cletus Kasady/Carnage.

Kelly Marcel (Disney’s upcoming CruellaFifty Shades of Grey) wrote the script. Marcel, who will also executive produce the movie, was one of the screenwriters on the first film. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal will produce again.

Sony Pictures reportedly wants to start filming the sequel in November.

Venom tells the evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character. Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancee. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom.
