AMC Theatres, Regal and Cinemark Delay Opening Until Late July

AMC Theatres, Cineworld’s Regal Cinemas, and Cinemark have announced that they will not be opening until late July due to movie studios delaying their film releases even further. Are you ready to head back to movie theaters? We’re curious to hear what you think in the comments below.

AMC Theatres, the largest theatrical exhibition company in the United States, Europe and the Middle East, has pushed back its US reopening date to July 30. On that day, it will resume operations of 450 U.S. theatres as part of a phased plan that is expected to bring the 600-plus U.S. theatre circuit essentially to full operation by early August.

Once the U.S. reopening commences, AMC will have theatres open in all 15 countries in which AMC operates. Theatres in all 14 countries AMC serves in Europe and the Middle East either opened in June or are planned to open in July as well. Barring further complications, AMC expects to be open at essentially its full complement of approximately 1,000 theatres globally by early August.

Adam Aron, CEO & President, AMC Theatres said, “We continue to devote extraordinary resources into our plan to operate our theatres with a hyper commitment to the safety and health of our guests and associates, notably in the United States through our new AMC Safe & Clean initiative. Our theatre general managers across the U.S. started working full time again today and are back in their theatres gearing up to get their buildings fully ready just a few weeks from now for moviegoers. That happy day, when we can welcome guests back into most of our U.S. theatres, will be Thursday, July 30.”

Cineworld has delayed the reopening date for its UK and Ireland venues and for its Regal Cinemas sites in the US until July 31 following changes to the release calendar.

Cineworld said: “In line with recent changes to upcoming film release dates, we have made the decision to move our re-opening date to 31st July. We hope that we will be able to reopen the doors of all Cineworld cinemas across the UK and Ireland at that time, subject to UK government restrictions. With the ongoing pandemic, this new date remains subject to final confirmation.

“We know how much you’ve been missing the cinema and we are excited to welcome you back to Cineworld soon! With great films ahead, including Mulan, Tenet, A Quiet Place Part II, Wonder Woman 1984 and many more, we can’t wait to be back.”

The third-largest chain, Cinemark, says it will now kick off its reopening of US theaters on Friday, July 24, with additional theaters reopening in subsequent weeks.

“Cinemark is pleased with the moviegoer response and key learnings from our initial five-theatre test-and-learn phase in the Dallas area, and we look forward to welcoming movie fans back into our auditoriums across the country to enjoy this year’s newest films,” said Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi.

“Our multi-phased reopening plan was thoughtfully designed with multiple contingencies in place that enable us to efficiently adapt to today’s ever-changing environment. We continue to pay close attention to status of the virus, local mandates and availability of new content while prioritizing the health and safety of our guests, employees and communities.”

The new reopening dates align with updated the release timing for major theatrical blockbusters like Warner Bros.’ Tenet (August 12) and Disney’s Mulan (August 21). Warner Bros. will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of Christopher Nolan’s Inception (check price at Amazon) with a re-release on July 31st.

Other releasees in July and August include Solstice’s action thriller Unhinged (July 31), Sony’s romantic comedy The Broken Hearts Gallery (August 7), A24’s psychological horror film Saint Maud, Disney/Marvel’s action fantasy film The New Mutants (August 28), Picturehouse’s inspirational drama Fatima (August 28), Orion’s comedy Bill & Ted Face the Music (August 28), and others.
