Alessandro Nivola is in negotiations to play Dickey Moltisanti in The Sopranos prequel, The Many Saints of Newark, according to Variety. In the series, Moltisanti is the deceased uncle of Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) and father of Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli). The character never appears, as he was murdered prior to the show’s timeline.
The film takes place in the 1960s, when riots swept through Newark, New Jersey and conflicts between African-American and Italian residents were at their worst. A few of the characters from The Sopranos are expected to appear in the movie.
Alan Taylor will direct the movie for New Line Cinema. Taylor, who directed nine episodes of the series, has credits that include TV shows Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire, and feature films Terminator Genisys and Thor: The Dark World.
David Chase, creator of the series, wrote the script for The Many Saints of Newark with Lawrence Konner. Chase will produce and Nicole Lambert will executive produce.
Nivola’s credits include HBO’s The Wizard of Lies, American Hustle, Selma, Neon Demon, and A Most Violent Year.
Hailed as one of television’s essential dramas, The Sopranos follows James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano: husband, father and mob boss whose professional and private strains land him in the office of his therapist.
