Alan Taylor will direct The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark for New Line Cinema, says TheWrap. Taylor, who directed nine episodes of the series, has credits that include TV shows Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire, and feature films Terminator Genisys and Thor: The Dark World.
David Chase, creator of the series, wrote the script for The Many Saints of Newark with Lawrence Konner.
According to the site, “the film takes place in the 1960s, when riots swept through Newark, New Jersey and conflicts between African-American and Italian residents were at their worst.” A few of the characters from The Sopranos are expected to appear in the movie.
Chase will produce and Nicole Lambert will executive produce.
Hailed as one of television’s essential dramas, The Sopranos follows James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano: husband, father and mob boss whose professional and private strains land him in the office of his therapist.
