After Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars Films Won’t Stick to a ‘Three-Act Structure’

-

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may be the last Star Wars film to have a three-act structure for a while, according to LA Times. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy spoke in the story about the transition from the Skywalker saga to what comes next.

In terms of working outside of the trilogy structure, Kennedy said, “I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure. We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.”

Of what the post-Skywalker universe will look like, Kennedy said, “Obviously, that’s what’s we’ve been spending so much time talking about, and it’s a really important transition for Star Wars. What we’ve been focused on these last five or six years is finishing that family saga around the Skywalkers. Now is the time to start thinking about how to segue into something new and different.”

Though there has been news in recent years about upcoming trilogies, notably from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, they are now off the project. We’ll be getting films from Kevin Feige and Rian Johnson, but the article states that it’s looking like the next film will be in 2022. Still, we have The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda for our fix for a bit. The show has been renewed for a second season, and will wrap Season 1 after the release of The Rise of Skywalker.

Of the upcoming films being more spread out, Kennedy said, “We’re literally making this up from whole cloth and bringing in filmmakers to find what these stories might be. It can take a while before you find what direction you might want to go. We need time to do that.”

As recently as November, Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke about this. “I have said publicly that I think we made and released too many films over a short period of time,” Iger said back then. “I have not said that they were disappointing in any way. I’ve not said that I’m disappointed in their performance. I just think that there’s something so special about a Star Wars film, and less is more.”

What do you think of the possible end of a “three-act structure” for the future of the films? Let us know in the comments. The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on December 20 and you can check out the new Chinese poster in the gallery below.
