Sony Pictures Animation has released the trailer for their new original animated comedy, Connected, directed by Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) and produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The LEGO Movie). The film is about an everyday family’s struggle to relate while technology rises up around the world!
In the film, when Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (voiced by Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time.
Katie and Rick are joined by the rest of the family, including Katie’s wildly positive mom Linda (voiced by Maya Rudolph), her quirky little brother Aaron (voiced by Mike Rianda), and the family’s delightfully chubby pug Monchi for the ultimate family road trip.
Suddenly, the Mitchells’ plans are interrupted by a tech uprising: all around the world, the electronic devices people love – from phones, to appliances, to an innovative new line of personal robots – decide it’s time to take over.
With the help of two friendly malfunctioning robots, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other and the world!
Opening in theaters on September 18, 2020, Connected is directed by Mike Rianda and co-directed by Jeff Rowe. The screenplay was written by Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe.
“We’re so excited to be able to work with director Mike Rianda on this film, which is such a personal story for him. As a filmmaker, Mike understands both comedy and emotion, which are two things that are really hard to find in the same person. He has a warm funny innovative vision for the movie and it’s been a joy to help him realize it,” said Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
They added: “‘Connected’ is a story that is both contemporary and timeless. Just like with ‘Spider-Verse,’ we are all trying to create something we’ve never seen before. So the movie feels fresh and hilarious but also incredibly sweet. Whenever we watch a new cut we laugh, we get choked up, and we’re reminded why we wanted to work with Mike and his team.”
The voice cast includes Abbi Jacobson as Katie Michell, Danny McBride and Rick Mitchell, Maya Rudolph as Linda Mitchell, Mike Rianda as Aaron Mitchell, Eric Andre as Mark Bowman, and Olivia Colman as Pal.
The film’s producers are Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Kurt Albrecht. The executive producers include Will Allegra and Louis Koo.
Mike Rianda studied character animation from 2007-2010 at the California Institute of the Arts and made the short films, Everybody Dies in 90 Seconds and Work. He has since been employed by Pixar Animation Studios and JibJab, taught at CalArts, and worked at Disney Television Animation where he served as a writer and creative director for the Annie Award-winning TV show, Gravity Falls.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s last animated feature with Sony Pictures Animation was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which opened in theaters in 2018 and grossed $375.5 million worldwide. The filmmakers, who directed The LEGO Movie, 22 Jump Street, 21 Jump Street, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, are developing a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse for 2022.
Lord and Miller, whose credits also include TV series The Last Man on Earth and Bless the Harts, have received an Academy Award, an Emmy nomination, multiple BAFTA’s and Critics Choice Awards. Up next, they are developing to direct the feature The Last Human for Sony and Artemis, based on the novel by The Martian author Andy Weir for Fox and New Regency.
