Courteney Cox Returning as Gale Weathers for the Next Scream Movie

-

Courteney Cox (Upcoming Shining Vale, Friends) has confirmed on her Instagram account that she will be returning as news reporter and author Gale Weathers in the next Scream movie. She joins previously-announced cast member David Arquette, who is coming back as Dwight “Dewey” Riley.

Neve Campbell previously revealed that she had also been in early talks, but her return as Sidney Prescott isn’t confirmed yet for the 2021 release.

Deadline says that the Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group movie will be filmed in Wilmington, North Caroline under the direction of filmmaking group Radio Silence (Ready or Not, V/H/S). Radio Silence consists of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney,” said Radio Silence. “We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”

The script was written by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock).

Franchise creator Kevin Williamson and the third member of the Radio Silence trio, Chad Villella, are executive producing. Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak serving as producers.

“It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers,” Radio Silence said when the project was announced.

“Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.”

Back in May, Neve Campbell said she “got this really, really respectful letter from the directors of the new one. They came to me with Scream 5, and these directors are incredibly talented. They wrote a letter honoring Wes in such a beautiful way, and they expressed that the reason they make horror movies is because of Wes and the Scream films.

“They also expressed how blown away they are at the idea of actually getting an opportunity to make one of them and how much they want to honor and respect Wes’ vision. It was just beautiful, and I was really grateful. I had really thought that the only way I’d step into a new project with new directors is if they really wanted to honor him.”

Campbell mentioned that they were only in the beginning stages of negotiations for the Scream reboot. “There are a lot of things up in the air, such as when we’ll actually get to make the movie and how we can even reenter this business at the moment.”

The Scream movies have grossed over $608 million worldwide. The first film was released in December of 1996 and was followed by Scream 2 in December of 1997. The third movie came to theaters in February of 2000 and was expected to be the last installment. Eleven years later, Scream 4 was released to theaters in April of 2011, however.
