Disney Undates Mulan, Reschedules Star Wars and Avatar Movies

-

The pushing back of movies due to the current health status continues, as The Walt Disney Studios has made some big moves today that include the upcoming Star Wars and Avatar movies.

“Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for Mulan as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world,” Disney said in a statement.

Disney’s Mulan, which was previously scheduled for an August 21, 2020 release, has now been removed from Disney’s release schedule altogether. Before the August date, the epic was originally set to open in March and then in July.

Directed by Niki Caro, Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The cast includes Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Tzi Ma as Zhou, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Honghui, Ron Yuan as Sergeant Qiang, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

Murder on the Orient Express

Previously scheduled for August 21, 2020, The Personal History of David Copperfield has been moved back two weeks to August 28. The film stars Dev Patel in the title role alongside Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Paul Whitehouse and Gwendoline Christie.

Opening on October 23, 2020 is Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile, which is a follow-up to the filmmaker’s Murder on the Orient Express. Branagh again plays Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and is joined by Tom Bateman (who reprises the role of Bouc), Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright.

The French Dispatch

Next up in today’s updated list is The Empty Man on December 4, 2020. The graphic novel adaptation had been scheduled for August 7. James Badge Dale plays a troubled ex-cop searching for a missing girl who uncovers a secretive group attempting to summon a sinister presence.

Like Mulan, Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, which was previously dated for October 16, 2020, has been removed from Disney’s release schedule for now. The film stars Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Lyna Khoudri, Jeffrey Wright, Mathieu Amalric, Stephen Park, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson.

The cast also includes Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss, Edward Norton, Willem Dafoe, Lois Smith, Saoirse Ronan, Christoph Waltz, Cécile de France, Guillaume Gallienne, Jason Schwartzman, Tony Revolori, Rupert Friend, Henry Winkler, Bob Balaban, Hippolyte Girardot, and Anjelica Huston.

Coming to theaters on February 19, 2021 is Antlers. In the film, a small-town Oregon teacher (Keri Russell) and her brother (Jesse Plemons), the local sheriff, discover that a young student (Jeremy T. Thomas) is harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences.

And set for an October 15, 2021 release date is Ridley Scott revenge drama The Last Duel, starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Adam Driver, and Jodie Comer.

Written by Damon, Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, the film is based on Eric Jager’s The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France.

And that brings us to the new Star Wars and Avatar movies, which will alternate December releases starting in 2022. The four Avatar movies are now scheduled for December 16, 2022, December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028. You can check out a statement from James Cameron about the changes above.

The Star Wars films will now open on December 22, 2023, December 19, 2025, and December 17, 2027.
